The best smoked chili starts with seasoned ground beef smoked over a Dutch oven, creating incredible smoke flavor. Simmered with tomatoes, green chilies, and black beans, this hearty chili is finished with sour cream, pepper jack cheese, jalapeños, and chipotle cream sauce.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 45 minutes
  • Yield: 8 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds 80/20 ground beef
  • 2 chili seasoning packets
  • 1 large onion, diced small
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced small
  • 16 ounces beef broth
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 4 ounces mild green chilies
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 can black beans, optional
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 2 ounces pepper jack cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chipotle cream sauce
  • 1 jalapeño, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Dice the onion and green bell pepper. Cook them in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat for 5–7 minutes.
  2. Add the green chilies, garlic, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, cinnamon stick, and 1¾ cups beef broth. Stir to combine.
  3. Mix the chili seasoning packets with the remaining ¼ cup beef broth to form a paste. Pour over the ground beef and mix until fully combined.
  4. Form the seasoned ground beef into an oval shape and place it on a wire rack.
  5. Preheat the smoker to 275°F and add your favorite wood chips. Once the smoker is producing smoke, place the Dutch oven on the smoker and set the wire rack with the ground beef on top. Smoke for about 2 hours, or until the beef reaches an internal temperature of 155°F.
  6. Break the smoked beef into bite-size pieces and add it to the Dutch oven along with the black beans.
  7. Stir well and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove and discard the cinnamon stick before serving.
  8. Serve in bowls topped with sour cream, pepper jack cheese, jalapeño slices, and a drizzle of chipotle cream sauce.
  9. Serve and Enjoy!
