Step 1: Prepare the Cream Cheese Mixture

Start by preparing the filling that will transform your salmon slices into creamy, flavorful pinwheels.

In a large bowl, combine the softened block of cream cheese, diced jalapeños, crispy chopped bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, and garlic powder.

Mix everything thoroughly to ensure an even distribution of flavors. The cream cheese mixture should be smooth, yet hearty enough to hold its shape when spread over the salmon.

Step 2: Prepping the Salmon Filet

Next, focus on the star of the dish: the salmon filet. Carefully remove the skin from the salmon using a sharp knife.

Once the skin is off, pat the salmon dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Generously season the salmon with your favorite BBQ rub, ensuring every inch is coated to enhance the smoky, savory flavor.

Step 3: Assemble the Jalapeno Popper Salmon Pinwheels

With your salmon filet prepped and seasoned, it’s time to assemble the pinwheels:

Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the top of the salmon. Be sure to cover the entire surface, leaving a small border around the edges to prevent overflow.

Starting from the tail end of the salmon, roll it tightly into a log. The tighter the roll, the better the pinwheels will hold their shape during cooking.

Secure the roll with twine at 1- to 1.5-inch intervals. This ensures the salmon pinwheels remain intact while grilling.

Using a sharp knife, cut between each piece of twine to create individual salmon steaks.

Step 4: Grill to Perfection

Preheat your grill to 250°F and add apple wood chips for a sweet, smoky flavor that pairs beautifully with salmon.

Place the soaked cedar plank on the grill, and arrange the salmon pinwheels on top. This method not only prevents sticking but also imparts an extra layer of flavor.

Cook the salmon pinwheels indirectly at 250°F for approximately 40 minutes.

During the final 15 minutes of cooking, brush each pinwheel with your favorite BBQ sauce for a glossy, caramelized finish.

Step 5: Rest and Serve

Once the salmon pinwheels have reached their ideal internal temperature, carefully remove them from the grill. Let them rest for 3 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute, ensuring every bite is tender and flavorful.

Serve the pinwheels warm, garnished with fresh herbs or a sprinkle of extra cheddar cheese for a finishing touch.

Why Jalapeño Popper Salmon Pinwheels Are a Must-Try

This recipe combines the best of two worlds: the creamy, spicy allure of jalapeño poppers and the rich, flaky texture of salmon. Here are some reasons why you’ll love this dish:

  1. Flavor Explosion: The blend of cream cheese, jalapeños, crispy bacon, and cheddar cheese creates a filling that’s bursting with bold flavors.
  2. Perfectly Balanced: The smoky BBQ rub and sweet apple wood smoke perfectly balance the creamy, spicy filling.
  3. Visual Appeal: These pinwheels are as beautiful as they are delicious, making them a show-stopping centerpiece for any meal.
  4. Healthy Indulgence: Salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, making this dish a nutritious choice without sacrificing flavor.

Pro Tips for Perfect Jalapeno Popper Salmon Pinwheels

  • Choose the Right Salmon: Opt for a fresh, thick salmon filet to make rolling easier and ensure even cooking.
  • Soak the Cedar Plank: This step prevents the plank from burning and infuses the salmon with a subtle woody flavor.
  • Monitor the Temperature: Overcooked salmon can become dry, so keep a close eye on the internal temperature, aiming for 140°F. Use a meat thermometer to monitor the internal temperature—the salmon is perfectly cooked when it reaches 140°F.
  • Customize the Filling: Feel free to experiment by adding chopped green onions, smoked paprika, or even a splash of hot sauce to the cream cheese mixture.

Serving Suggestions

Pair your Jalapeño Popper Salmon Pinwheels with complementary sides to complete the meal. Here are some ideas:

  • Grilled Vegetables: Asparagus, zucchini, or bell peppers add a fresh, healthy contrast.
  • Rice Pilaf: A lightly seasoned rice dish balances the bold flavors of the pinwheels.
  • Crisp Salad: A simple green salad with a tangy vinaigrette cuts through the richness of the salmon.

Conclusion

Jalapeño Popper Salmon Pinwheels are a creative and flavorful way to enjoy seafood on the grill. By combining a seasoned salmon filet with a decadent cream cheese mixture, this dish delivers a perfect balance of smoky, spicy, and creamy flavors.

Whether you’re hosting a barbecue or looking for an impressive dinner idea, these pinwheels are guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser. Fire up the grill, and treat yourself to this unforgettable dish today!
